We believe our federal and state civil rights are among the most fundamental rights afforded to people in the United States. In fact, our civil rights are what sets the United States apart from many other nations. Civil Rights are what keeps us truly free and help to allow us to be free from unfair treatment under the law.

Mayo Bartlett spends much of the year engaged in trial practice and asserting the rights of his clients. He represents the families of people who were shot and killed by the police, as well as survivors of police use of force. Mayo Bartlett has been selected as the AVVO Client's Choice for Civil Rights Lawyers. He was also recognized as a Super Lawyer and selected as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers.

Many people are unaware of the fact that people have be injured or killed by the police for simply refusing to allow them to enter their home on a medical call. For that reason, it is essential that you know your rights and that you are aware of the safest ways to conduct yourself if you come into contact with the police.

THE KILLING OF KENNETH CHAMBERLAIN SR.

Mayo Bartlett is one of the attorneys who successfully represented Kenneth Chamberlain Jr. in his civil rights law suit against the City of White Plains New York following the killing of his father, Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. by the White Plains Police, who responded to a Life Aid medical call.

Rather than leaving after having been advised by Mr. Chamberlain that he was not in need of medical attention, they forced their way into his home after a 90 minute standoff, ultimately using a taser, a bean bag shotgun and finally fatally shooting him with a gun. Following a 12 year litigation effort which included a trial, an appeal, and mediation, the matter was settled for $5 million.

In addition to the settlement, Mayo worked with Kenneth Chamberlain Jr. and others to change the way police respond to people suffering from mental illness. Other efforts include serving as Co-Chair of the Westchester County Police Reform and Reimagining Task Force, which among other things recommended an Office for Police Accountability (OPA) which will serve as an independent body to review police use of force and other complaints against police.

We dedicate our practice to providing outstanding legal representation to people who have been had their civil rights violated by members of law enforcement or in the workplace and who have been injured because of the negligence, recklessness, or intentional acts of others.

Our success is a direct result of the relationships we build with our clients. We firmly believe that the best way to build and maintain a successful law practice is by respecting our clients, and by seeking to achieve their legitimate objectives.

We represent each client in a professional, assertive, and thoughtful manner while maintaining our integrity.

Discrimination in Lending

It has been revealed that many banks and other financial institutions have been systematically discriminating against people based upon their race.

A recent example of this unconstitutional behavior is the allegation that Navy Federal Credit Union has denied approximately 50 percent of Black applicants for loans, even though many of the applicant were qualified to receive the requested loans.

If you have been discriminated against by a lending instituion, please contact us so we may determine whether you have a case we may assist you with.

We represent each client in a professional, assertive, and thoughtful manner while maintaining our integrity. Our firm has experience representing clients in the following types of cases:

  • Police Misconduct

  • False Arrest

  • Unlawful Imprisonment

  • Malicious Prosecution

  • Excessive Force

  • Wrongful Death
